Real-world sports games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stated that the "athletic" e-sports project can be considered as a sports event for the Olympic Games, but it will not consider any e-sports events involving violence. This decision will eliminate many very popular game items.

AliSports, the Chinese e-commerce giant's Alibaba Group, communicated with the Olympic Committee to participate in e-sports. When they joined the Olympics, they discovered that the most direct value of the Olympic Committee is to promote peace. Zhang Dazhong, CEO of AliSports, told Bloomberg in a recent interview: “This is the reason for the future development of e-sports. We will pay more attention to sports-related projects rather than games that focus on violence.”

In addition, back in August last year, the International Olympic Committee Chairman Thomas Bach said in an interview with the South China Morning Post: “We want to promote non-discrimination, non-violence, and peace among people, which is incompatible with many video games. In accordance with the spirit of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Games must draw a line with some electronic games that promote violence, explosions and killings."

This is considered a "clear threshold". It seems that most of the most popular e-sports projects at the moment will miss the Olympics, such as "League of Legends", "Solid for survival", "Dota 2", "COD" and "CS". There are "Star Wars" and "StarCraft", although millions of fans and professionals have already established a good arena Rocket League Crates. In addition, the Olympic Games’ definition of violence in the game may even involve the Hearthstone (which contains cartoon simulation attacks) and the Rocket League (where cars blow up other vehicles in a collision).

According to Bach, Zhang Dazhong, and others, the IOC is more inclined to directly simulate real-world sports games such as EA's FIFA and 2K Sports' NBA 2K series. These e-sports projects will also require a recognized third-party management agency to distinguish themselves from game publishers. The International Olympic Committee can trust the agency to enforce rules such as the prohibition of doping.

If all goes well, we can theoretically see players winning the Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, according to the survey, only 28% of sports enthusiasts in four countries think that esports should join the Olympic Games. If the most popular games are excluded, this figure may be even smaller.
