The Kansas City Explorers Team

In 1972, the World Hockey Association was established. Although it never threatened the status of the Stanley Cup, its potential competitor status has not been ignored by the NHL. In view of this, the NHL decided to fully implement its expansion plan in response to the New York Islanders and the Atlanta Fire Team in the same year. Two years later, it added the Kansas City Explorers Team and the Washington Capitals NHL Coins.

The two leagues competed for fans and players until the WHA was dissolved in 1979. Four remaining WHA teams joined the NHL: the Harvard Whalers, the Edmonton Oilers, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Quebec Nordic. In the early 1990s, the NHL added five more teams. The San Jose Sharks joined in 1991; after a season, the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning team entered the league. In 1993, the Anaheim Ducklings and the Florida Jaguars also joined the league.
